Huckleberries in the Bitterroot

by your Innkeeper, Linda

July’s the month to start looking for those tiny little purple gems – huckleberries. Per those experienced pickers this years harvest is a good one. The colors range from deep purple to light maroon, color variation is due to how much light that particular berry receives. Not all berries are huckleberries, some berries that could be mistaken for huckleberries are poisonous.  Edible berries can be identified by the circle on the bottom where the petal used to be.  If you wish to share your favorite huckleberry spot; I’m listening.

This summer I’ve been fighting grasshoppers in the flower bed. These pests range in color from yellow to brown and from tiny to large. I believe this is one of the misfortunes of growing green things.

This is a busy weekend in the area – Logger Days in Darby, Strawberry Festival, the Walk by the Moon is this evening at Lake Como and this morning was a great farmer’s market. The zucchini is starting to be productive – it will soon be time to start making zucchini bread.

We’ve had a number of guests from all over the United States i.e. Nevada, California, Washington State and Washington D.C., Connecticut – great fun taking about their travels, occupations and interests.
